Lupe Fiasco - Words I Never Said [audio + review]
Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at 01:43AM Tweet
It's so loud inside my head with words that I should've said
as I drown in my regrets, I can't take back the words I never said
Lupe opens the track with "I really think the war on terror is a bunch of BULLSHIT". Line for line, track for track, "Words I Never Said" is Fiasco close to his lyrical apex. He excels at opinionated songs as much as conceptual works, with previous joints like "American Terrorist", "Conflict Diamonds", and "Dumb it Down" as substantial precursors. The teaser I shared earlier provides a visual list of quotables, so I will not rehash all of them here. One point of note is that Lupe reiterates his lack of enthusiasm for President Obama due to foreign policies that appear hypocritical, and conflict with Fiasco's ideology:
Limbaugh is a racist, Glenn Beck is a racist
Gaza strip was getting bombed, Obama didn’t say shit
Thats why I ain't vote for him, next one either
I’ma part of the problem, my problem is I’m peaceful
And I believe in the people.
If "Words I Never Said" gives us an indication of what to expect from Lasers, then gear up for yet another substantial offering from a man I consider to be the most lyrically refreshing emcee of the new millennium. It is no coincidence that Lupe debuted a verse from this track while on a panel with Michael Eric Dyson at a university forum - he is one of the greatest literary minds of our time, and deserves to be in the pantheon of lyricists alongside Nas, Andre 3000, Black Thought, and Rass Kass. Lupe Fiasco is a super emcee. No doubt about it. Expect details on that thought as Lasers draws closer.
